Happy Father’s Day!
We appreciate all you do!
DID YOU KNOW:
The history of Father’s Day dates back to the early 20th century, when Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, wanted to create a holiday to honor her father. Her father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent after his wife died in childbirth.
Inspired by the newly established Mother’s Day, Sonora Smart Dodd campaigned for a similar holiday to honor fathers. The first Father’s Day celebration was held on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, WA. However, it took many years for the holiday to gain national recognition.
In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a national holiday in the United States.
Today, Father’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, though the dates vary by country. The holiday serves as a day to honor fathers, grandfathers, and father figures for their contributions to family and society.
